Why is my baby grunting and kicking their legs so much?

Baby asleep

Baby’s are such noisy sleepers! They spend so much time in active sleep, rather than deep sleep. They kick their legs, move around and can even cry in their sleep.

If you find your baby is kicking their legs a lot and even waking themselves up doing this there could be a number of things this could be but ultimately it’s coming from discomfort. The baby could be taking in air when feeding - you can usually assess this by listening to if there’s a clicking in their mouth when they’re feeding (breast or bottle).

Clicking when feeding can be a key sign of tongue tie so it’s definitely worth checking with your health visitor or seeing if you can get a private appointment. Hallie had tongue tie and at the time it was only covered by the NHS up to 6 weeks old without further need for referral. The tongue tie operation is a very simple operation, a quick snip - still not nice but it could make your baby much more comfortable. Read more information about it here on the NHS website.
