How much exercise does my baby need?

Babies doing tummy time

Exercise is crucial for children of all ages to contribute to their overall wellbeing and also to their sleep. Exercise benefits all areas of sleep - latency, duration and quality.

Sleep latency is the amount of time it takes to fall asleep (the aim here is for around a 15 minute window to fall asleep). If it’s taking a long time for a baby to fall they could be undertired and a baby falling asleep immediately could be a sign of overtiredness.

Babies need a minimum of 30 minutes of tummy time throughout the day.

Toddlers and pre-schoolers need a minimum of 180 minutes exercise a day, this could be walking, going to the park, going to soft play or going for a scoot.

Older children need 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per day.

So whether it’s rain or shine, hot or cold, tog up and get out. You’ll feel better from getting out and about too!
